I saved old t-shirts for years because I just couldn’t bring myself to throw them away. I figured that there must be something that I could make out of them. My collection was becoming a bit cumbersome so this month I decided it was time to use those t-shirts for the stash busting craft challenge. The end result is this knitted t-shirt yarn organizer!

HOW TO MAKE T-SHIRT YARN
Making t-shirt yarn is quite easy. Here are the steps:
- Select t-shirts that have no side seams. Seamless t-shirts make excellent t-shirt yarn. Out of all of my old shirts not one was seamless, so I had no choice but to make my yarn with seams. It still worked but the yarn was a bit lumpy.

- Snip off any tags.

- Lay the t-shirt flat onto the cutting surface smoothing out all bumps.

- Fold the t-shirt almost in half, leaving the top layer shorter than the bottom layer.

- This next step is the tricky step. Cut the t-shirt at the diagonal to make one continuous strand of yarn.

- Continue cutting the t-shirt on the diagonal for the remaining strips. You will end up with one long strip like this:

- Next, take a segment of the t-shirt and pull to curl the ends of the strip inwards. Do this for the whole shirt.

HOW TO MAKE THE KNITTED T-SHIRT YARN ORGANIZER
I made the knitted t-shirt yarn organizer with a knitting loom. I think it is the dummies version of knitting! (I actually have no idea how to knit with needles.)

It’s very simple, just follow the directions that come with the loom. I used two and a half t-shirts to make the knitted t-shirt yarn organizer. The top of the organizer naturally curled over. I went around the loom for a total of 26 times.
- 11 purple
- 4 grey
- 4 black
- 7 grey
To complete the organizer, gather the last row of stitches together to close off the bottom. For a finishing touch, I added a black bow around the top.
Here is a close up of the organizer:

You can see bits and pieces of the seams from the t-shirt. That is why it is better to use seamless t-shirts.

The organizer is surprisingly sturdy and can hold heavy items without collapsing.
