Craft Challenge #3: Embroidered Spirograph Pillow

I am really enjoying this Stash Busting Challenge! This month I decided to try and bust through my stash of embroidery thread. I created an embroidery pattern and then hand stitched it onto a pillow cover to create my Embroidered Spirograph Pillow.

CREATING THE EMBROIDERED SPIROGRAPH PILLOW

1. DESIGN THE SPIROGRAPH PATTERN

This spirograph inspired pattern may look complicated but it is just an oval that been turned six times. I made this pattern in a software program called Silhouette Studio. This program comes with a electronic cutting device called a Silhouette CAMEO.

Isn’t that easy? Now, have the Silhouette CAMEO sketch the pattern with a permanent iron-on transfer pen. The iron-on pen was held in an accessory called a Pen Holder that can use with all kinds of writing utensils. You can see it in action in this video:

I know…my video skills are AWFUL but hopefully you can look past that!

2. MAKING THE PILLOW COVER

To make the pillow cover, I used a tutorial over at Grandma Bee’s Recipes. I have made this envelope pillow cover many times before and it always turns out great. (As an aside, here is another project that I made using this pillow cover: Christmas Burlap Pillow Cover.)

3. IRONING THE PATTERN ONTO PILLOW COVER

Before sewing the pillow cover together, the spirograph pattern needs to be ironed to the front panel.

4. EMBROIDERING THE DESIGN

Next, embroider the design using a backstitch. Make sure to use 3 strands of thread.

5. FINAL TOUCHES

When the embroidery is complete, remove the tape from the front panel and sew the pillow cover together. There you have it, the embroidered spirograph pillow is now complete!
