My living room needed a little bit more “Christmas” in it so I decided to cover my existing living room pillows with a DIY Christmas burlap pillow cover. This DIY project is fast and easy to make and the results are stunning. And here’s a bonus-the covers are way easier to store than bulky pillows.
I love burlap. I am drawn to its rustic, warm and earthy feel which I think is perfect for Christmas. I then paired it with glitter heat transfer vinyl and a running stitch of red yarn.
Supplies
- Burlap
- Matching thread
- Reindeer design
- Glitter Heat Transfer Vinyl (HTV)
- Red Yarn
Equipment
- Sewing Machine
- Silhouette CAMEO (or other electronic cutting device)
- Silhouette Studio Software (or other design software)
- Iron
- Darning needle
Step 1
Make an envelope pillow cover following the tutorial here at Grandma Bees Recipes. Her instructions are easy to follow for any sized and shaped pillow.
Step 2
Find a design that is similar to the shape of your pillow. This reindeer shape worked great for my square pillow.
Step 3
Down size the design to 65% of the pillow’s size. For example: my pillow is 16″x16″. Using a calculator, punch in 16x.65=10.4. I then made my design no larger than 10.4″.
If the design is too large, it will fold over with the natural curves of the pillow. Scaling your design down to 65% will ensure that this does not happen.
Step 4
Create a mirror image of your design and delete the original. Open the “Replicate Window” and choose either mirror right or left. This step is especially important if there are words in your design.

Step 5
Use your Silhouette CAMEO to cut your mirrored design out of glitter HTV.
Step 6
Weed the HTV and then find the center of the design and the center of the pillow cover. Iron the HTV onto the pillow cover.
Step 7
Using a darning needle and red yarn, stitch a simple running stitch to add a border to the design.
Step 8
Insert the pillow into cover.
And there you have it, the perfect DIY Christmas burlap pillow cover to add to your seasonal decor!

I’ve linked this project up at Nap Time Creations. Here’s one of the co-hosts ideas has an adorable snowflake tunic that she made with her Silhouette CAMEO too. Check it out here.
